A few times I got asked about cloth diapers, here you can find my experience with them and tips. This is what I send a friend a while ago.UPDATE: I did cloth diapering with my first very diligently, with my 2nd it got less, as it was so much work and I rather spent quality time with my kids, and with my 3rd I haven't been able to do so. But please this shouldn't hold you back. I wish I could still do it. It is so much better for the kids bumps, they leak less pooh and they are better for the environment too!
Which diapers?
Pretty much from the beginning we used the SmartNappies from Mothercare for our little one (available e.g. on Ebay UK). It seems since I used them they have been replaced with another model. But I still really like their way.
I have the first 3 sizes (Newborn, Small, Medium).
The great thing about them is, that they are not as big on there bump (like others All-in-Ones (AIO=One size for the whole diaper-time) and the top layer leads the water to the soaking layers and the baby bump stays dry. And they also try fast and are cheaper than other cloth-diapers.
How many diapers?
For the Newborn-Size I had 4 Outers and 10 Inners. I would recommend to buy more of them. At least double the amound or around 10 Outers and 20 Inners. As we also practiced diaper-free/elimination communication (more at the end) which saved some diapers.For the Small-Size (3-6kg) we had 10 Outers and 16 Inners (Inners for small and medium are the same). But I didn't have enough Inners. The Outers were the right amount though (with laundry every 2-3 days). The diapers were fine for max 4h, at least with us.
For the Medium-Size (5,5-9kg) I have 14 Outers and 36 Inners (I bought some additional ones, since we had to less when we used size small). Now I have nearly too much Inners, as around 2 Inners for one Outer are perfect. The Outers are soaking nearly no liquid and then you can use them multiple times. 4h is the maximum time we can use them in average. Now I do laundry around 3 times in 2 weeks. That's very time-efficient. From around 8 month I would use the Newborn-Inner or a half Small/Medium-Inner (as I had too much I separated a few) as an extra buffer.
Nighttime?
As I brought our little one quite fast on a good routine (more in other posts, but this means mainly, that the baby gets enough food and wake time during the day and sleeps through the night early), she basically slept through the night with 2 month. That means more than 4 hours. Therefore I used disposable ones at the beginning during nighttime. But they leaked as well. Then I borrowed a totbots-AIO diaper from a friend of mine:
I really love them! They are fine for up to 12h, which is also great for during the day.
But they are bigger on their small bumps, as you can use them from the beginning until the "end". And this one also feels wet. Therefore we only use them at nighttime. And they also need longer to dry and are more expensive. I have 7 of them, so theoretical it is enough to wash once a week.
Other brands and disposables?
When I started to dig into this topic I was overwhelmed from the offered variety. There are "thousands" of other kinds. But I was successful with these ones. And a friend of mine used other ones and loved these ones as well.When I had no chance to wash or we went for a holiday I used disposable ones.When she poohed in these ones, it was all over her clothes and car-seat. Disgusting :( And with the cloth-diapers I never had pooh-leaks. And until we started solids it is not disgusting. And then you use a liner and throw it away as well.
Where to buy?
I nearly bought all my diapers at ebay UK and asked if they can send it to Dubai. I payed a little bit more for shipment but now I have them for my 2nd one as well. One time I bought used ones, I would not do that again, as I had the feeling they weren't treated nicely, but they were still usable.There are also diapers available in other parts of the world. For me this system worked and so I bought more. I also found packages with 4 different diapers to try, but they were more expensive. But there are also very cheap (price and quality) from HongKong. A friend bought another brand of diapers, they were even more expensive than mine and now they are falling apart. And not all materials are good for our sweetheart's bumps. So it's better to spend some more for the first diapers and reuse them.
How I wash them...
At the beginning I soaked the diapers every time before washing. That took a lot of time and energy. After soaking I washed them with normal laundry detergent, but the diapers then lost their soaking power after a while. Then I stripped them with washing them once with a dish-washer-tab (rinse them, rinse them, rinse them after that :) ). That helped. I'm planning to do that now once in a while.That's the way I do it now:
I put everything in the washing machine, I put one drop of essential teatree oil and some vinegar. Then I let them run through the prewash circle. I leave it soaking in there for a few hours or a whole night and then I wash them with 50:50 coth-diaper-detergent and normal laundry-detergent. After that they are clean, smell-free and soak quite a lot. If they still have stains, I hang them in the sun and the diapers will be white after that!
And now a word about EC (Elimination Communication)
Elimination Communication means to communicate with your kids about when they need to go right from the start. This is what we have continued doing with all our 3 kids. It didn't necessary help with potty training our first one that much, but it saved time and diapers by holding them over the toilet when you change them anyways.How we did it?
We started holding them over the toilet right from the start. Either when we changed the diaper or when she gave clear signs (on the go and at the beginning we just hold her over the diaper) and then we did a "Pss" Sound for number one and a "ehhh" sound for number two. She is still using her diapers, but for the first 2 month 1/3 went in the diaper, 2/3 into the toilet. After a month she did number 2 mainly into the toilet. We had some problems though when number 2 had some changes in consistence and then it worked better again. When she was 2 month old we started with a potty. One out of 3 number 2s went on the potty. Then 2 out of 4. Now she only does number 2 in the diaper if we don't read her signs or on the go. She still wets her diaper though, which I don't mind. But she is still peeing when we sit her on the potty. With around 10 month we had already nights when she would wake up in the morning with a dry diaper.
Our 2nd child potty trained himself before his 2nd birthday, and this might have played in too.
Our 3rd now being 1 year old, gives me the sound if she needs to go number 2 and we catch quite a few.

Schon mehrmals wurde ich nach meinen Stoffwindeln, meiner Erfahrung mit Stoffwindeln und Tipps dazu gefragt. Hier schreibe ich euch nun, was ich kürzlich einer Freundin von mir geschrieben habe.Welche Windeln?
So ziemlich seit der Geburt unserer Kleinen benutzen wir die SmartNappies von Mothercare (erhältlich z.B. über Ebay UK)Ich Habe die ersten 3 Größen (Neugeborene-Newborn, Klein-Small, Mittel-Medium)
Das tolle daran ist, dass sie nicht extrem bullig am Po sind (wie andere Windeln, die es in einer Größe für die ganze Windelzeit gibt) und dass die oberste Schicht der Einlage wasserdurchleitend und so trocken an Babys Po bleibt. Außerdem trocknen sie nach dem Waschen extrem schnell. Sie sind auch preislich billiger als andere Stoff-Windeln.
Wieviele Windeln?
Also ich hatte für die Neugeborenen-Größe 4 "Höschen" und 10 Einlagen. Würde da aber empfehlen mehr zu besorgen. Mindestens doppelt so viel Oder vielleicht 10 Höschen und 20 Einlagen. Wir haben aber nebenher "Windelfrei" (mehr unten) gemacht, was uns Windeln erspart hat :)Für die kleine Größe 3-6kg hatte ich 10 "Höschen" und 16 Einlagen (Einlagen für klein und mittel sind die gleichen). Hier hat es mir immer an Einlagen gefehlt. Ansonsten von den Höschen war es super für alle 2-3 Tage waschen. Die Windeln halten für maximal 4h aus, bei mir zumindest, bzw. bei Tabita natürlich :)
Bei der mittleren Größe (5,5-9kg), die ich immernoch benutze habe ich 14 "Höschen" und 36 Einlagen (habe welche dazugekauft, das heißt das sind die gleichen Einlagen wie für die kleine Größe). Da habe ich jetzt fast zu viele Einlagen. Denn 2 Einlagen pro Höschen sind eigentlich perfekt. Da die Höschen kaum Feuchtigkeit aufnehmen und so mehrmals verwendbar sind. 4h ist hier auch das Maximum. Jetzt wasch ich 3 Mal in 2 Wochen. Das ist echt Zeiteffizient. Mittlerweile (ab ca. 8 Monate) nehme ich noch die Neugeboreneneinlage bzw. eine halbe Klein/Mittel-Einlage (da ich zuviel hatte, habe ich welche zerschnitten) als zusätzlichen Saugschutz.
Nachts?
Da ich die Kleine schnell auf eine Routine (mehr in anderen Beiträgen, das heißt hauptsächlich, Kind bekommt am Tag genügend Essen und schläft deswegen nachts durch) gebracht habe, hat sie mit 2 Monaten durchgeschlafen. Also mehr als 4h. Deswegen habe ich am Anfang Nachts Wegwerfwindeln verwendet. Aber die sind auch ausgelaufen. Dann habe ich eine Nacht von einer Freundin eine totbots-Einheitsgrößenwindel ausgeliehen:Die ist super, hält bei mir bis zu 12 h. Auch wenn ich mal eine für länger für tagsüber brauche.
Sie ist aber sehr bulgig, da sie theoretisch von Anfang an bis zum "Ende" benutzt werden kann. Außerdem fühlt sie sich nass an. Deswegen gibt's die bei uns fast nur nachts. Auch brauchen sie länger zum trocknen. Hier ist auch eine Windel um einiges teurer. Habe davon mittlerweile 7 Stück, so kann ich theoretisch einmal die Woche waschen :)
Und andere Marken oder Wegwerfwindeln?
Als ich mich in die Windeln eingearbeitet habe, war ich überwältigt von dem großen Angebot. Es gibt natürlich noch tausend andere Arten. Ich war eben mit diesen hier erfolgreich. Eine befreundete Mutter hatte auch andere und fand auch diese beiden sehr gut. Ich habe aber ein paar Mal, wenn ich net gewaschen hatte, oder als wir mal in n Hotel sind, Wegwerfwindeln angehabt. Als sie da drin ihr großes Geschäft erledigt hat ging es überall hin. Und das war ecklig :) Ich muss sagen, bei den Stoffwindeln ging nie etwas daneben. Und bis zur Beikost ist es auch echt nicht eklig. Und man kann auch noch ein spezielles "Flies" drüber legen, was dann damit weggeschmissen wird.Wo kaufen?
Ich habe fast alle meine Windeln über ebay.uk bestellt und gefragt ob die es mir nach Dubai schicken. Dadurch habe ich jetzt mit den Windeln fürs erste Kind etwas mehr bezahlt, da die Versandkosten hoch waren, aber ich kann sie alle fürs 2. Kind wiederverwenden. Einmal habe ich gebrauchte gekauft, und das würde ich von dem Punkt nicht wiedermachen, da ich glaube, dass diese nicht gut gepflegt wurden. Sie sind aber noch voll funktionstüchtig.Also man bekommt auch in Deutschland Stoffwindeln, es gibt da soviel Auswahl, das man garnicht weiß was gut für einen ist. Und es kann auch sein, dass mein System nicht für euch funktioniert. Als ich mal gegoogelt habe, habe ich so Art Starterpackete mit 4 unterschiedlichen Windeln gefunden, aber die waren extrem teuer. Also totbots bekommt man z.B. auch übers deutsches Ebay. Pass aber auf, es gibt da auch sehr billige Angebote aus Hongkong. Ich kenne ne Freundin die hat ne andere Marke Stoffwindeln, die waren teurer als meine, und da löst sich die ganze Windel auf. Außerdem sollte auch nicht jedes Material an Babys Po. Also lieber bissle mehr ausgeben und dann die Windeln auch fürs nächste Baby benutzen...

Waschen?
Am Anfang habe ich alle Windeln immer eingeweicht. Das war ein Act. Danach habe ich sie mit normalen Waschmittel gewaschen, aber da haben sie nach einer Weile nicht mehr so gut gesaugt, so dass ich sie dann einmal mit einem Spülmaschinentab gewaschen hat. Das hat geholfen. Werde ich nun ab und zu machen.Jetzt mache ich es so:
Alles in die Waschmaschine, einen Tropfen Teebaumöl dazu ( http://shop.bahnhof-apotheke.de/rose-teebaum-essenz-10ml.723.html) und ein paar Spritzer Essigreiniger. Dann lass ich den Vorwaschgang laufen. Mache ne Nacht oder ein paar Stunden Pause, so dass sie in der Waschmaschine einweichen und dann starte ich mit Hälfte Stoffwindeln-Waschmittel und normales Waschmittel. Also da kommen sie sauber, geruchsfrei und saugfähig raus. Wenn sie dann noch "Flecken" haben hänge ich sie in die Sonne (hab ich auch mit Kleidern die bei der Wegwerfaktion voll gekackt worden gemacht) und die Flecken bleichen rückstandslos raus!
So jetzt noch zu Windelfrei :)
Das bedeutet, dass wir von Anfang an unsere Kleine beim Windelwechseln oder bei Anzeichen übers Klo gehalten haben (unterwegs oder ganz am Anfang auch über der Windel) und einen Psssss Sound gemacht haben. Kinder haben nämlich von Geburt an noch die Fähigkeit ihre Blase und Schließfunktion :) zu kontrollieren und bewusst zu öffnen. So hat sie gelernt bei dem Psss Sound zu machen. Das heißt es geht immer noch was in die Windel. Aber die ersten 2 Monate ging ungefähr 1/3 in die Windel 2/3 ins Klo. Wobei das größere Geschäft nach einem Monat fast ausschließlich ins Klo ging. Dann hatte sie Probleme mit der Umstellung auf härteren Stuhlgang und so ging ne Weile mehr in die Windel. Mit 2 Monaten fingen wir auch mit Töpfchen an. Das heißt einer von 3 Stuhlgängen gingem bis zum 4. Monat aufs Töpfchen. Dann wurden es 2 von 3. Jetzt ist es fast nur noch, wenn ich unterwegs bin und sie nicht aufs Töpfchen geht oder ich nicht schnell genug auf ihr Zeichen reagiert. Pinkeln geht immernoch viel rein. Obwohl sie fast immer pinkelt, wenn man sie aufs Töpchen setzt. Mittlerweile war sie morgens schon 6 Mal komplett trocken und auch manchmal nach den Nickerchen am Tag. Ich finde das eine gute Kombination zu den Stoffwindeln :) Ich habe das Buch hier, leider eben nur auf englisch:Aber es gibt auch deutsche Bücher dazu, meist als Windelfrei oder Topffit beschrieben.
Ist es nicht lustig wie sich die Themen in unseren Leben ändern. Aber, ich hoffe ich kann euch damit helfen.
