Letter to a Mum-to-BE-Me - Ein Brief an mich als ErstlingsMama

in deutsch & english!!! Für deutsch, auf die Fahne klicken. ENGLISH below.

If I could go back in time. I would write myself a letter before I had my first baby.

"Dear (first time) mom-to-be,

I know you are looking forward to your little one coming soon. I know it, I have been there. I thought I had it all together and was prepared enough. And even in this there you are, feeling like you know nothing! And here I am 7 years later, and it wasn't that bad. But as I reflect on a few things,

I thought it would have been nice to know a few things before I had my first one. So the idea for this fictional letter came up, to me as a First-Time-Mum, you First-Time-Mum or mum of your Xth! Everyone is welcome to read and I am sure we could all learn from each other, you from what I write and if we could sit and chat over a cup of coffee, me from you too!

1. The Birth

Being a mum starts with giving birth. The natural way, via c-section or the birth pain like way of adoption. And it is a beautiful experience, but it can be scaring too, in many ways. Talking about it and your experience after might help.

Also one of the books I would have loved to read before is the Book "Natural Childbirth the Bradley way". But I talked about birth before, read about my great 2nd birth and ways to help you have a better birth here.

2. What you think you need is not what you actually need to raise a child

You will find a new way to love and you will want the very best for this baby.
But the very best won't mean getting all the things the world tells you you need and are available on the market for this little one.
What your little one needs the most, is your time and love.

With Baby Number one I was so tempted to compare myself with others. I didn't have as much toys and clothes than others. But please don't believe the lies of the world telling you, you need that all!

Now with Baby #3 being a girl again I decluttered my baby girl clothes and toys before they even were used and I had so many.

Allie Casazza and her free online resources and also my lovely sister in law Anna have really inspired me with being more minimalistc (Check out Anna's blog about her art and great way of being a mum here). I admire her for the way she does it.

I am on my way to find my balance with minimalism. And because of the positive changes I see already, I want to motivate you into this direction as well! We have gained freedom by living with less and by stopping to collect everything. My children learn that they don't need everything available to be happy. The play better, they clean up better and they are doing better as they know, less is more!

Everyone is different and for me it doesn't work the same way, but I am trying to find my own good balance and I want to inspire you to do so too. I am planning to write more blogposts about it but here comes my first one.
The only 6 toys you need for the first 6 months of your babies life.

3. Having a child means making decisions, and there is not always a right and wrong answer

Another point I want to tell you First-Time-Mum-Me is, there will be many times where it is so hard to make a decision how to parent. And often there won't be a right and wrong. There might be your way which is the best for you but not the best for others! Listen to advice, don't judge. Take what you like or works for you and forget the rest.
Parenting is often like a seesaw, see both sides and see when it moves, that's the point you decide.
One of my blog posts might help you in parenting a sick child and deciding what to do.

https://life-in-scribbles.blogspot.com/2018/05/wisdom-with-sick-kids-kranke-kinder-was.html

For me the BIBLE is a big guideline for parenting and I love the book "Shepherding a child's heart" which draws a biblical guideline to go along while finding your own way.

4. You are this child's parent for a reason

There are times where you question everything, but there is one thing I want you to know:
There is a loving God out there who decided to place exactly this child with you in your family and chose you to be the best mom for this child!

You will do mistakes, but you can turn around, ask for forgiveness and correct them.
Thanks to God you can change and grow more and more towards a better parent. As a Christian I believe I can become a parent self-sacrificially loving my child like Jesus did, as he can change my heart. I can give my life for my child as Jesus gave his life for me, if I believe in him.

5. Nourishing your child

One of the main things we focus from the start is how much kids gain weight, what they eat, healthy or not, easiest ways, ...
We want to give our best, and that often starts with us trying to Breastfeed. Which sounds amazing!

One thing about Breastfeeding dear, it won't always be easy. Looking back on my 6 year journey I have had difficulties. If you know me you might not believe me. It might always look so easy on the outside, but most likely every mum will have some difficulties. Believe in yourself and fight for it, if this is the way you want to go. And if it doesn't happen out of whatever reason, don't feel like a bad mum!

My friend Mariska M. told me, that she would have loved to know as a first time mum,
"To enjoy the baby more and not worry so much! And I wish I would have been able to afford an lactation consultant! Breastfeeding is often very hard for a lot of mums and as a first time mum especially!"

6. What comes in comes out

My other friend Michelle told me to include the topic "Elimination Communication". I have talked about it before in this post about clothes diapers.

https://life-in-scribbles.blogspot.com/search/label/cloth-diapers

Elimination Communication means to communicate with your kids about when they need to go right from the start. This is what we have continued doing with all our 3 kids. It didn't necessary help with potty training our first one that much, it might have with our second, but it definitely saved time and diapers by holding them over the toilet when you change them anyways.

WE have hold our kids over the toilet from an early stage doing a noise associated with whatever they do. Later we put them regularly on a potty to get them familiar with it and also doing the noise. This has resulted with our kids using a potty early and having this already part of their life before we throw diapers totally out of the windows. This means also for my 17m old to often do the big job on the potty in the morning, which might help during the day. But no pressure and it also doesn't always happen!

7. Walk the path yourself

So dear me when I was a first time mum, take this to your heart.
But dear me first time mum, I know you read things like this when you were a first time mum, but some things you only learn when you do the mistakes yourself.

So should I delete this letter? No I won't, as there might be a mum out there, who might want to read this and needs this!

Don't be discourage, I am sure you are a great mum, keep on going. Pray for help, refresh in God's word and keep trying on the way to become a better mum.

"Natural Childbirth the Bradley way".

 http://life-in-scribbles.blogspot.com/2014/05/a-great-hospital-birth-in-uae-rak-eine.html

2. Was Du denkst, Du brauchst, ist nicht unbedingt, was du brauchst

https://life-in-scribbles.blogspot.com/2018/05/wisdom-with-sick-kids-kranke-kinder-was.html

6. Alles was nicht Miete zahlt muss raus

https://life-in-scribbles.blogspot.com/search/label/cloth-diapers

Cloth-Diapers // Stoff-Windeln

Link

in deutsch & english!!!

A few times I got asked about cloth diapers, here you can find my experience with them and tips. This is what I send a friend a while ago.

UPDATE: I did cloth diapering with my first very diligently, with my 2nd it got less, as it was so much work and I rather spent quality time with my kids, and with my 3rd I haven't been able to do so. But please this shouldn't hold you back. I wish I could still do it. It is so much better for the kids bumps, they leak less pooh and they are better for the environment too!

Which diapers?

Pretty much from the beginning we used the SmartNappies from Mothercare for our little one (available e.g. on Ebay UK). It seems since I used them they have been replaced with another model. But I still really like their way.

I have the first 3 sizes (Newborn, Small, Medium).
The great thing about them is, that they are not as big on there bump (like others All-in-Ones (AIO=One size for the whole diaper-time) and the top layer leads the water to the soaking layers and the baby bump stays dry. And they also try fast and are cheaper than other cloth-diapers.

How many diapers?

For the Newborn-Size I had 4 Outers and 10 Inners. I would recommend to buy more of them. At least double the amound or around 10 Outers and 20 Inners. As we also practiced diaper-free/elimination communication (more at the end) which saved some diapers.

For the Small-Size (3-6kg) we had 10 Outers and 16 Inners (Inners for small and medium are the same). But I didn't have enough Inners. The Outers were the right amount though (with laundry every 2-3 days). The diapers were fine for max 4h, at least with us.

For the Medium-Size (5,5-9kg) I have 14 Outers and 36 Inners (I bought some additional ones, since we had to less when we used size small). Now I have nearly too much Inners, as around 2 Inners for one Outer are perfect. The Outers are soaking nearly no liquid and then you can use them multiple times. 4h is the maximum time we can use them in average. Now I do laundry around 3 times in 2 weeks. That's very time-efficient. From around 8 month I would use the Newborn-Inner or a half Small/Medium-Inner (as I had too much I separated a few) as an extra buffer.

Nighttime?

As I brought our little one quite fast on a good routine (more in other posts, but this means mainly, that the baby gets enough food and wake time during the day and sleeps through the night early), she basically slept through the night with 2 month. That means more than 4 hours. Therefore I used disposable ones at the beginning during nighttime. But they leaked as well. Then I borrowed a totbots-AIO diaper from a friend of mine:

I really love them! They are fine for up to 12h, which is also great for during the day.
But they are bigger on their small bumps, as you can use them from the beginning until the "end". And this one also feels wet. Therefore we only use them at nighttime. And they also need longer to dry and are more expensive. I have 7 of them, so theoretical it is enough to wash once a week.

Other brands and disposables?

When I started to dig into this topic I was overwhelmed from the offered variety. There are "thousands" of other kinds. But I was successful with these ones. And a friend of mine used other ones and loved these ones as well.
When I had no chance to wash or we went for a holiday I used disposable ones. When she poohed in these ones, it was all over her clothes and car-seat. Disgusting :( And with the cloth-diapers I never had pooh-leaks. And until we started solids it is not disgusting. And then you use a liner and throw it away as well.

Where to buy?

I nearly bought all my diapers at ebay UK and asked if they can send it to Dubai. I payed a little bit more for shipment but now I have them for my 2nd one as well. One time I bought used ones, I would not do that again, as I had the feeling they weren't treated nicely, but they were still usable.

There are also diapers available in other parts of the world. For me this system worked and so I bought more. I also found packages with 4 different diapers to try, but they were more expensive. But there are also very cheap (price and quality) from HongKong. A friend bought another brand of diapers, they were even more expensive than mine and now they are falling apart. And not all materials are good for our sweetheart's bumps. So it's better to spend some more for the first diapers and reuse them.

How I wash them...

At the beginning I soaked the diapers every time before washing. That took a lot of time and energy. After soaking I washed them with normal laundry detergent, but the diapers then lost their soaking power after a while. Then I stripped them with washing them once with a dish-washer-tab (rinse them, rinse them, rinse them after that :) ). That helped. I'm planning to do that now once in a while.

That's the way I do it now:
I put everything in the washing machine, I put one drop of essential teatree oil and some vinegar. Then I let them run through the prewash circle. I leave it soaking in there for a few hours or a whole night and then I wash them with 50:50 coth-diaper-detergent and normal laundry-detergent. After that they are clean, smell-free and soak quite a lot. If they still have stains, I hang them in the sun and the diapers will be white after that!

And now a word about EC (Elimination Communication)

Elimination Communication means to communicate with your kids about when they need to go right from the start. This is what we have continued doing with all our 3 kids. It didn't necessary help with potty training our first one that much, but it saved time and diapers by holding them over the toilet when you change them anyways.

How we did it?
We started holding them  over the toilet right from the start. Either when we changed the diaper or when she gave clear signs (on the go and at the beginning we just hold her over the diaper) and then we did a "Pss" Sound for number one and a "ehhh" sound for number two. She is still using her diapers, but for the first 2 month 1/3 went in the diaper, 2/3 into the toilet. After a month she did number 2 mainly into the toilet. We had some problems though when number 2 had some changes in consistence and then it worked better again. When she was 2 month old we started with a potty. One out of 3 number 2s went on the potty. Then 2 out of 4. Now she only does number 2 in the diaper if we don't read her signs or on the go. She still wets her diaper though, which I don't mind. But she is still peeing when we sit her on the potty. With around 10 month we had already nights when she would wake up in the morning with a dry diaper.
Our 2nd child potty trained himself before his 2nd birthday, and this might have played in too.
Our 3rd now being 1 year old, gives me the sound if she needs to go number 2 and we catch quite a few.

I like the combination together with cloth-diapers and can higly recommend this book:

Isn't it funny how the topics in our lifes change? I hope you enjoyed reading that and I could help you :)
THIS POST INCLUDES AFFILIATION LINKS, please use them to support me!

Also totbots bekommt man z.B. auch übers deutsches Ebay.
http://www.naturwindeln.de/index.php

Waschen?
