Fingerprints on my sermon notes // Fettflecken auf den Predigtnotizen

in deutsch & english!!!

As a mum of toddlers there is not a lot of time to listen to sermons. I have 5 books I have been reading in the last year. All are not further than chapter 4, but I pick them up whenever I have a few minutes. BUT LISTENING TO A SERMON seems impossible. So I gave up on it. UNTIL NOW, when I was planning to listen to a whole series of sermons to prepare myself for a church camp about this topic. So I have to listen to them somehow. AND I also like to take notes, so I needed a solution.

In the last few months I probably only could listen to 50 % of the sermons in our church, due to sickness or the kids not staying in nursery. The other 50 % I either missed them totally or got only parts of it. So it was a dry walk through the desert spiritually. Reading the bible and the books helped when I could spare inbetween cooking, changing diapers and playing with the kids. BUT LISTENING TO GOD'S WORD preached is something different. The best would be to listen to it as part of a service and in your church. Just sometimes it works not as well like in my case some weeks or you need or want more.

SO I WANT TO ENCOURAGE YOU, LISTEN TO SERMONS in the midst of your business.

Just a few steps which helped me.

  1. Find a good refreshing and solid sermon (I can recommend you the sermons from the church we used to go - UCC DUBAI - or the one we go to right now - RAK CHURCH -  (we changed churches as our second one got planted by the first) or sites like this one - DESIGING GOD -)
  2. Listen on your phone or mp3-Player with headphones (otherwise the loudest setting on your speaker might be not loud enough to be louder than the kids or the dishes)
  3. Have the scripture printed or on another device so you can follow along
  4. Have a paper and a pen next to you and take notes, no matter how dirty they get
  5. Stop and pause if you need to take a note
  6. Stop and pause if you do a task (like checking on the kids) where you cant listen
  7. Repeat if you missed a poing
Yes, it TOOK LONGER to empty and repack the dish washer. BUT I also listened to a 45 min sermon. And last week when I listened to two sermons and got the sermon on Friday (in the country we live in that's when we have our service, but for you most likely Sunday) it was just such a green valley spiritually. AND I live in the desert, so I know the difference :)

Please take your time as a busy mum, or busy of work or any other business the world puts upon us and care for yourself. We need it!

God bless you!

Gott segne dich!

A great HOSPITAL Birth in the UAE-RAK // Eine angenehme Geburt in einem Krankenhaus in den VAE-RAK

in deutsch & english!!!

2,5 years ago I gave birth in Dubai in a well known hospital. As other people had good experiences there I am not planning to mention it or the doctor. I was not well informed at that point, even though I thought I read up enough. Also my husband wasn't informed enough and our daughter decided to come 2 weeks earlier and so we were even more unprepared. My water broke and a weak labor started. It was painful but very bearable. I was still able to joke, which is in the book I mention later a sign for not having the real labor yet. We drove in the hospital hoping for a beautiful birth like I always thought it would be. I knew it would be painful but I thought I know what to expect. So arriving there I was only a few centimetres open and the doctor told me, either 24 hours of very painful exhausting labor or 6 hours with induction. I informed myself enough to not wanting an induction, but 24 h sounded even worse (I think now it would not have been 24h, but if so, I think it would have been the better choice), so we agreed. As soon as it kicked in, it took me over. It was terrible, painful, unmanageable… Her heartbeat went down, they had to suck her out, cut me, she had breathing difficulties, we were exhausted, had breastfeeding difficulties, I felt guilty, mad with me, my husband, maybe even the baby (WITHOUT REASON). It took a long time too heal, physically and mentally! And mentally I think until my 2nd birth in 2013.

My BIRTHSTORY 2013

Preparations:

  • This time I read this book, recommended by a friend: Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way And I also had my husband read some of it. I can only highly recommend it. It is a must-read for every first-time mum or a mum who wants to have a different birth this time around... Through reading it I recognised what went wrong the first time.
  • I also found a good doctor, but changed to another one when I was 36 week because of the location. I also found a hospital and doctor willing to consider letting me labor in a birthing pool (I ended up not using it or getting full permission, as I went into labor before I even had the pool and my labor was too short too). As I will mostly speak good about them. I am sure they don't mind mentioning them. It was Dr. Pauline at RAK Hospital.

The Birth

My 1st appointment with the new doctor was when I was 37 weeks. My previous doctor already mentioned to me that the baby would come soon. The new doctor though said she didn't think so :)

But just at the next day I had the first Contractions. They weren't strong at first and therefore I stayed at home and relaxed like the Bradley Methode recommends. That was still 5 days before my son was born. I had contractions up to a minute, 30 min to 2 hours apart for about 48 h. Then they stopped.
(I think one of my mistakes at the first time around was, that I went to the hospital too early. So if that would had happened first time around, I think I would have gone to the hospital now, probably ended up with induction, maybe leading to nothing and then maybe ending up with a c-section. So I am thankful that I didn't end up with a c-section first time around at all, as I say now: ONE INTERVENTION LEADS TO THE NEXT...)

Then with 38 weeks, at the 26th of November 2013 I heard a blop at around 8 am when still resting in bed and my husband was still fast enough to get the towels - my water had broken.

At 9 am contractions started. I was breathing through them again with the help of my husband and a birth oil containing jasmine, clary sage, rose, ylang-ylang, sesame oil, sunflower oil, jojoba.

At 10 am I was 4-5 min apart 45 sec long. So we made our way to the hospital.

We arrived at 10:30 with 2-3 min apart 45 sec long and quite intense. After 3 min in emergency checking for admission they brought me into a delivery room without admitting me, as they saw I was progressing. I already felt the urge to use a toilet which I realised was the urge to push. Last time I didn't feel it, then I had to push when people told me. When I realised it this time and told the midwifes, they called for the doctor, checked me, found out I was fully dilated and brought me into pushing position. They had a great hospital bed for it and every push felt great without pain. I must say until that point I had used gas like at my first birth, as I asked for it again.

I later thought I pushed only 2 times, in my husbands point of view though I pushed 5-7 itimes and then our baby was born at 11.40 am

I had to be cut again, but because it had been badly sewed from the previous delivery.

But the whole birth was amazing and so peaceful. And after he was crying immediately, they even left us alone and I could start breastfeeding.

They really left us quite by ourselves in a nice room for the next 48 hours, which I really liked. Only came for pain medicine. A pediatrician came once and checked for the baby being fine and said: "Don't give a bottle. There is nearly no reason for not breastfeeding. Breast is best."
(If you read this, beeing in the UAE, having problems with breastfeeding, please check out this great support group on facebook: Breastfeeding Q&A Dubai UAE)

The hospital really respected our wishes during birth and after.

The doctor really coached me great to push the right way and the maternity package even included a foot massage.

SO it was such a nice birth. It was like I always wanted it to be…

Only 3 things I didn't like:
  • I had to have an IV, just in case, but I guess that allows them to let you go longer and be prepared in case.
  • They served white bread for breakfast and never asked for my food preference. BUT OTHERWISE the food was great!
  • No lactation consultant came to see me, I asked about that later though and they said they didn't see the need as I was doing so well and seemed so confident.

I thank God for protecting me, giving me a healthy baby and a supportive husband. I thank my husband for reading up and being prepared and standing in for me. I thank my friends who supported me. And last but not least my fabulous Doctor Dr. Pauline.

AND I Hope you can benefit from my experience too. Feel free to contact me or comment below.

Dubai for a Visit

We are very blessed by beeing able to welcome a lot of friends to visit us in Dubai. To prepare them, I always send them a list of things to do. And I thought it might be helpful to other people. So these are the things I recommend you and I also wrote how long it will take and how much it will cost.

One side-note. In Dubai everything takes longer, so don't plan to much at one day. Rather enjoy 2 things :)

Must-Does (in my and our guests opinions)

  • Desert-tour (max 300AED, ~3pm-11pm, with BBQ, Camel Ride, ...), e.g from Arabian Tours or Desert Rangers or one of our friends Tariq is offering it as well for a little bit less (click here for visit his side)
All our visitors loved this one! I will mention some cheaper options for it later.
  • The biggest Mall in Dubai: "Dubai Mall" and the tallest Building of the World "Burj Khalifa" (Mall is free, Visit the Tower: 100AED or 400AED, a whole afternoon/evening), stop here in the evening (or for sunset), for shopping, aquarium, fountains (from 6pm every 30min, they also have 2 afternoon shows)
All our visitors loved the mall and the fountains. I myself didn't enjoy going on top of the Burj Khalifa that much. I think a Desert-Tour is much better! But if you want to go on top of Burj Khalifa, you should book the ticket in advance for 100aed (click here) instead of normally 400aed. The only risk you have in buying in advance, that you never know in Dubai, if there is a nice view and it is actually worth it. But what I really enjoyed was the kind of museum they offer before you actually go to the observation desk. You can learn a lot about the Burj and how it was build and more.
  • A City-Tour (Price depends, At least half a day) The best way to do this is having a friend driving you around. Then you can visit whatever you want :)
A cheap way to do it is a metro-sight-seeing tour do-it-yourself
(max14aed for metro + taxi costs)
    1. get a free big bus tour map (has all the sights on it, get it e.g. in Mall of the Emirates) and a metro map or download it (the Metro line goes perfect through the city)
    2. Find the sights you want to visit, compare the maps and take the metro stops near the sights or just stay in the metro and watch the city running by :)
    3. Take taxis to the sights (see how to reach sights later)
BUT you can also do a hop-on-hop-off city tour on double-layer-bus (around 300 AED) with big bus tours or wonderbus (on ground and in water). Check also my post about cheaper ways later!

Other Things to do:

  • Mall of the Emirates - nice Mall with the Ski-Hall
  • Burj Al Arab - nice Hotel, only from outside (if you want to go inside you need to have a reservation and a minimum spend)
  • Souq Madinat Jumeirah - nice Mall, looks like a old souq, nice to take pictures of "Burj Al Arab", but expensive, nice to have some food
We normally take our visitors here one night to the restaurant "Al Makan", it can get expensive there, but if you do the following you will spend around 200 AED for 4 people:
    • Order together and share the following (Eat Starters and Main Courses together with a lot of bread (bread is free, so ask for more if you want): 3 of these Starters: Hummus, Moutabel, Fatoush, Tabouleh and 2 of these Grills: Shish Tawouk (Chicken Kebab), some Lamb (try Lamb here, it tastes nowhere else in the World like here in Dubai), some Beef or take 2 mixed grills (more expensive)
    • Ask for the local pop, this is the only restaurant serving it once in a while
  • JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) Walk and Beach or Marina Walk - it's  in the evening for some nice drinks at the beach or even go into the water at this free city beach (very busy :))
  • Water Parks (100AED-200AED, full day): That's a fun thing to do for the whole family. Water Parks in the UAE are nearly everywhere. There are 2 in Dubai and 2 in the surrounding areas. I prefer the Wild Wadi one before the Atlantis one. Wild Wadi has everything and more than Atlantis. And there are also IceLand and Dreamland, which I haven't visited yet. I will mention some cheaper options for it later.
  • Dubai Creek (for free, half/whole day) - experience the old town Dubai with it's spice and gold souq and the Abra! Go to Al Ghubaiba Metro Station. Go to the ground level. Here you see the heritage village. You can go there or/and then walk to the Abra-Stop. The Abra is a traditional Water Taxi, which takes you over the creek for 1 AED (ask which one is the 1AED one). Then on the other side of the creek you find the spice and the gold souq. On your way to Al Ras Metro-Station ask for the Heritage-House. Which is a great display of traditional Emirati Living. Enjoy a free cup of traditional tea or coffee there!
  • Dubai Heritage Village - do it together with the Creek, same Metro Station...
  • Dubai museum - also in the Creek area
  • Dinner Dhow Cruise (70-200AED with Dinner) - that's a great way to finish a day. It's at the creek, exit Rashid-Bin-Al-Waleed Metro Station and either walk or take a taxi down there. Either prebook or book as you go (more expensive...) I will mention some cheaper options for it later.
  • Abu Dhabi - if you have enough time, you can rent a car and go and visit Abu-Dhabi. Get a Big Bus Map for free (e.g. in Mall of the Emirates) and you have all the sights they have there. I would recommend a day trip. Go and visit Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the Corniche Beach, Emirate Palace (no shorts allowed here) and the little Mall.
  • Dibba and Fujairah - you can also rent a car and drive over to the other side of the UAE. Our visitors normally like that. We drive buy the Friday Market where you can get good bargains for carpets and fruits and then go to relax until sunset at the beach in Dibba.

Beaches

  • Jumeirah Beach Park (5Aed, half/whole day) - that's a really nice beach with palms, showers and changing rooms.
  • JBR Beach - free but busy City-Beach
  • Burj Al Arab - Beach - This is basicly next to the Burj Al Arab. It is a nice beach with showers and it's free.
  • Nice lonely beach - with showers, changing rooms and toilets. It's hard to find though. But if you have a GPS, that are the coordinates for a Geocache hidden there: N 25° 10.768 E 055° 13.081. Here is the link to the Cache...

How to reach SIGHTS:

Save some cash:

Just recently there are more and more deal websites for all over the world. Also Dubai has a few where you can get really good offers for nearly everything: Desert Tour, City-Tours, Hotels, Water-Parks, Dinner Cruise, ... Just check the conditions, that it is valid in the time period you need it. I bought a few of them and was always cheaper then the other people in the same group. So go for it. Here are some links:

Another way to save money is The Entertainer!
When you are planning to do a Desert Safari and Water Park or something else. It is already payed of by one of them and you save at the next one if you won't get a deal at the above mentioned Deal-Websites...

...

I hope you will have a good time and enjoy your trip to the UAE. Please leave comments to let me know if you think I should add something to the list or if you liked it!!! But please don't just steal the information for other websites, but feel free to link this post.

  • Mall of the Emirates - schönes Einkaufszentrum mit der Skihalle
  • JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence) Walk and Beach or Marina Walk -Diese "Strandpromenade" bzw.
  • Dubai museum - Auch in Creek Nähe

  • Burj Al Arab - Beach - Dieser Strand is fast neben dem Burj Al Arab.

Cloth-Diapers // Stoff-Windeln

Link

in deutsch & english!!!

A few times I got asked about cloth diapers, here you can find my experience with them and tips. This is what I send a friend a while ago.

UPDATE: I did cloth diapering with my first very diligently, with my 2nd it got less, as it was so much work and I rather spent quality time with my kids, and with my 3rd I haven't been able to do so. But please this shouldn't hold you back. I wish I could still do it. It is so much better for the kids bumps, they leak less pooh and they are better for the environment too!

Which diapers?

Pretty much from the beginning we used the SmartNappies from Mothercare for our little one (available e.g. on Ebay UK). It seems since I used them they have been replaced with another model. But I still really like their way.

I have the first 3 sizes (Newborn, Small, Medium).
The great thing about them is, that they are not as big on there bump (like others All-in-Ones (AIO=One size for the whole diaper-time) and the top layer leads the water to the soaking layers and the baby bump stays dry. And they also try fast and are cheaper than other cloth-diapers.

How many diapers?

For the Newborn-Size I had 4 Outers and 10 Inners. I would recommend to buy more of them. At least double the amound or around 10 Outers and 20 Inners. As we also practiced diaper-free/elimination communication (more at the end) which saved some diapers.

For the Small-Size (3-6kg) we had 10 Outers and 16 Inners (Inners for small and medium are the same). But I didn't have enough Inners. The Outers were the right amount though (with laundry every 2-3 days). The diapers were fine for max 4h, at least with us.

For the Medium-Size (5,5-9kg) I have 14 Outers and 36 Inners (I bought some additional ones, since we had to less when we used size small). Now I have nearly too much Inners, as around 2 Inners for one Outer are perfect. The Outers are soaking nearly no liquid and then you can use them multiple times. 4h is the maximum time we can use them in average. Now I do laundry around 3 times in 2 weeks. That's very time-efficient. From around 8 month I would use the Newborn-Inner or a half Small/Medium-Inner (as I had too much I separated a few) as an extra buffer.

Nighttime?

As I brought our little one quite fast on a good routine (more in other posts, but this means mainly, that the baby gets enough food and wake time during the day and sleeps through the night early), she basically slept through the night with 2 month. That means more than 4 hours. Therefore I used disposable ones at the beginning during nighttime. But they leaked as well. Then I borrowed a totbots-AIO diaper from a friend of mine:

I really love them! They are fine for up to 12h, which is also great for during the day.
But they are bigger on their small bumps, as you can use them from the beginning until the "end". And this one also feels wet. Therefore we only use them at nighttime. And they also need longer to dry and are more expensive. I have 7 of them, so theoretical it is enough to wash once a week.

Other brands and disposables?

When I started to dig into this topic I was overwhelmed from the offered variety. There are "thousands" of other kinds. But I was successful with these ones. And a friend of mine used other ones and loved these ones as well.
When I had no chance to wash or we went for a holiday I used disposable ones. When she poohed in these ones, it was all over her clothes and car-seat. Disgusting :( And with the cloth-diapers I never had pooh-leaks. And until we started solids it is not disgusting. And then you use a liner and throw it away as well.

Where to buy?

I nearly bought all my diapers at ebay UK and asked if they can send it to Dubai. I payed a little bit more for shipment but now I have them for my 2nd one as well. One time I bought used ones, I would not do that again, as I had the feeling they weren't treated nicely, but they were still usable.

There are also diapers available in other parts of the world. For me this system worked and so I bought more. I also found packages with 4 different diapers to try, but they were more expensive. But there are also very cheap (price and quality) from HongKong. A friend bought another brand of diapers, they were even more expensive than mine and now they are falling apart. And not all materials are good for our sweetheart's bumps. So it's better to spend some more for the first diapers and reuse them.

How I wash them...

At the beginning I soaked the diapers every time before washing. That took a lot of time and energy. After soaking I washed them with normal laundry detergent, but the diapers then lost their soaking power after a while. Then I stripped them with washing them once with a dish-washer-tab (rinse them, rinse them, rinse them after that :) ). That helped. I'm planning to do that now once in a while.

That's the way I do it now:
I put everything in the washing machine, I put one drop of essential teatree oil and some vinegar. Then I let them run through the prewash circle. I leave it soaking in there for a few hours or a whole night and then I wash them with 50:50 coth-diaper-detergent and normal laundry-detergent. After that they are clean, smell-free and soak quite a lot. If they still have stains, I hang them in the sun and the diapers will be white after that!

And now a word about EC (Elimination Communication)

Elimination Communication means to communicate with your kids about when they need to go right from the start. This is what we have continued doing with all our 3 kids. It didn't necessary help with potty training our first one that much, but it saved time and diapers by holding them over the toilet when you change them anyways.

How we did it?
We started holding them  over the toilet right from the start. Either when we changed the diaper or when she gave clear signs (on the go and at the beginning we just hold her over the diaper) and then we did a "Pss" Sound for number one and a "ehhh" sound for number two. She is still using her diapers, but for the first 2 month 1/3 went in the diaper, 2/3 into the toilet. After a month she did number 2 mainly into the toilet. We had some problems though when number 2 had some changes in consistence and then it worked better again. When she was 2 month old we started with a potty. One out of 3 number 2s went on the potty. Then 2 out of 4. Now she only does number 2 in the diaper if we don't read her signs or on the go. She still wets her diaper though, which I don't mind. But she is still peeing when we sit her on the potty. With around 10 month we had already nights when she would wake up in the morning with a dry diaper.
Our 2nd child potty trained himself before his 2nd birthday, and this might have played in too.
Our 3rd now being 1 year old, gives me the sound if she needs to go number 2 and we catch quite a few.

I like the combination together with cloth-diapers and can higly recommend this book:

Isn't it funny how the topics in our lifes change? I hope you enjoyed reading that and I could help you :)

Also totbots bekommt man z.B. auch übers deutsches Ebay.
http://www.naturwindeln.de/index.php

Waschen?

Babywise-Mom-Blog // Babyschlaue-Mami-Blog

<<<span class=Link

in deutsch & english!!!

The Babywise-Mom-Blog is a blog I really love to read and I can recommend to every mum, mum-to-be and busy housewife! Valerie Plowman, a mom of nearly 4 (pregnant :) ), writes so near to life with so many helpful tipps and idea. I don't know how she does it, but I love everything she writes!
She writes about babys sleep issues, marriage, books, chores, toys, ... Go on this blog and you will probably spent a lot of time there.

I found her, because I really like the book babywise. A really good book for new mums. With a lot of good advice. And with every book: Use your mind :) This book got a lot of bad critic. I can understand why on one side, but not on the other side. Don't let this stop you from buying this excellent book and read the blog I talk above, to get practical advice for it! Thanks to the book, our little one slept through the night with 2 month. I also know some babys, for who it didn't work so easy. But it is definetly worth a try!!!

in deutsch & english!!!

March 2011 - A friend got me to do the pregnancy test and after 20 minutes we saw the first little signal of our little one. How great was that! It was official. I was pregnant. And that, quite far away from home in another language. Everything sounded very strange and unfamiliar. I'm sure that's the same if it is in your own language as well. But in another language, man it's even scarier.

With 7 weeks pregnant I went to the doctor and we saw our little one the first time. How exciting. We heard many definitions we didn't know. But it didn't matter, when we saw her on the screen. That's universal for sure :)

2 days later they called me and said my thyroid values are very bad. I need to see a doctor as soon as possible, otherwise I can loose the baby. Thyroid? That's not part of the vocabulary school prepares you for :) So I got totally scared. I called a friend who is a doctor and researched. And I found out it's half as bad as I thought. As soon as I read the german word for thyroid, everything was clear. Thyroid-Issues? That was a problem my family was facing since generations ago. So I went to a doctor with a canadian friend. He explained everything and after that she explained it again for me. Ok. I took hormons and soon the problem was solved.

Then we had the next scan a few weeks later. After it they called me and said I had an "urinary tract infection" and I need to see a doctor as soon as possible. Image the words "urinary tract infection" with an irish accent, not really understandable, over the phone, and also not part of the normal school vocabulary. Who says school prepares you for life? Is a pregnancy not part of life :) Whatever. I called a friend again, and another one. They encouraged me to go after what the doctor said and I went to the pharmacy to get the antibiotics. So I had the antibiotics, I opened the packaging to read the instruction and it said: "DON'T USE WHEN PREGNANT". Ok, at this point I freaked out. I was at a friends party and I was sitting alone in his bedroom, planning to take the medicine. My husband was outside having fun. I was crying. Would that kill my baby? Would that bring any chance of disability? I mean, I didn't really know what I had at this point, as I didn't had any pain or so. So I called some friends again. One said to me: "See the benefits before the risk. If the baby can be affected by the infection, you should take the medicine. I took it as well with 3 out of my 4 pregnancies (she was still pregnant with the 4th) and the only difference in them was, that the babys turned blond." I liked that humour. So I swallowed the medicine with a big prayer to God. Later I found out what a UTI is and that it is very common during pregnancies. If I would have known that, I could have prevented it!

Then, more and more foreign words came up during the next few months: stretch marks, episotomy, epidural, labour, contractions, uterus, perinea, ... Words which are foreign words even for english speakers. And I managed it somehow :) And I ended up not knowing them in german :)

One thing I learned through all of this: God is in control. He let the pregnancy happen and he wanted the baby to be born. He protected our little one the whole way down. So God teached me a lot about his sovereignty in this pregnancy!

And it was also exciting to experience this pregnancy in another language. So different to what I thought about a pregnancy when I was younger and though so similar!

And I have to say: I really enjoyed my pregnancy and I had the best husband supporting me!

If you want, here is another great post about pregnancy from a blogger, who feels like a friend already! "Being pregnant and being a mum"

Super Blog, leider in englisch:
